Lumiere means "light" in French, and appropriately, the two massive Sw chords beginning this piece are intended to depict Genesis 1. "and God separated the light from the darkness. " The first chord represents the flickering, primordial ray of light, and the second chord, the chaotic darkness. Co-existing at first, the Sw's bring these two elements in and out of focus, until at last, the light gains the victory.
