Le Villi, Puccini's first opera, was written for entry in a contest. Although it did not win the contest, its obvious merits earned it a production and the interest of Giulio Ricordi, whose firm would publish every one of Puccini's operas but La Rondine. Decidedly Puccinian in style despite the unfamiliar subject, the score stands well on its own and is a fascinating study.
